Hi Karyn,

Below is a worthy service opportunity that I hope you can share with our ROTC students.  You, and they, can read more about the WHIT program below, but basically WHIT is a local non-profit that provides free tutoring to foster children.  I personally met with the staff last week and can tell you that their passion and commitment to our foster children is unmatched.

They are needing 25 tutors ASAP to support 25 foster students with tutoring for 1 hour/week, until the end of school.  That’s a commitment of ONLY 8 hours from now until May 23rd when SAISD closes for the school year.  I know many ASU students go home when the semester ends, but tutoring can also be done virtually.  Those 8 hours can make a world of difference to these young kids who deserve to have an ally in their education. Our ROTC cadets can be that ally!

Can you please share this with them? WHAT IS THE WHIT PROGRAM INC.

WHIT stands for, Weekly Hands-on Independent Tutoring. We are a non-profit organization that provides free tutoring to children in foster care. Children in foster care start off behind, we catch them up! The WHIT program achieves this goal by training volunteers, predominantly University students, to provide free tutoring for children in foster care to bring them up to grade level. We have 18 Universities across Texas that have students volunteering with our program. We can also provide reference for employment , or future education opportunities for WHIT tutors.

 WHAT DO TUTORING SESSIONS LOOK LIKE:

Tutoring sessions occur weekly for one hour and can take place in person or virtually, depending on where the child is placed.
Face-to-face tutoring sessions can only take place at the public or University library in the town where the child is placed. Virtual sessions take place via the Zoom or Teams platform in a very engaging one child/one tutor setting.
