ASU'S DARREN RICHARDSON TO HELP REBUILD AFGHANISTAN'S AGRICULTURAL SECTOR
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service announced that Darren Richardson, district conservationist with USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service in Seminole, Texas, has volunteered to serve a one-year assignment in Afghanistan to help rebuild that country's agricultural sector.
Richardson will serve as a USDA PRT (Provincial Reconstruction Team) agricultural advisor.  Born and raised in Texas, Richardson received a degree in animal science from ASU.   PRT advisors work on a variety of projects depending on the needs of the province.  All projects are aimed at helping Afghanistan reconstruct the physical and institutional infrastructure of its agricultural sector.
In Afghanistan, PRTs are led by the U.S. Department of Defense and are typically composed of about 50-100 military personnel and several civilians.  The PRT agricultural advisor is one of only a few civilians on the PRT.
