Fall 2011
Aphra Behn Society
Fall in the Aphra Behn Society often means elections, and that is the case this year. We must say farewell to two long-serving officers, Nicole Spottke, Member-at-Large, and Ereck Jarvis, Membership Secretary. We are all indebted to them for their thoughtful, dedicated service to the Society. Fortunately, although elections mean the departure of valued colleagues, they also mean the arrival of new colleagues, whose contributions and energy we welcome. Many thanks to the generous people on this ballot who have volunteered to serve the Aphra Behn Society.
Please vote for ONE candidate for Member-at-Large and one candidate for Membership Secretary. Send your ballots to Dr. Karen Gevirtz, Executive President, at Karen.gevirtz at shu.edu<mailto:Karen.gevirtz at shu.edu> by October 20, 2011. Results will be announced by October 25, 2011 so new officers can begin their terms November 1, 2011.
MEMBER-AT-LARGE
A Member-at-Large is a general representative to the Executive Board, contributing to the overall administration of the Society. He or she can initiate discussion on issues of interest to the Society and is expected to discuss, vote, and act on such issues, such as changing membership dues or choosing a site for the biannual conference.
PLEASE VOTE FOR ONE CANDIDATE:
1. Cassie Childs is a doctoral student at University of South Florida. She is working with Dr. Laura Runge on place theory, ecocriticism, and feminist theory in eighteenth-century British women-authored texts.
2. Nichol Weizenbeck is a very active feminist who is currently working on a Ph.D at the University of Denver. She is particularly interested in women writers and will be giving a paper on Barbauld at the upcoming Aphra Behn Society meeting in Canada. Nichol is a graduate assistant to Jessica Munns and associate editor of the journal Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Theatre Research.
3. Jamie Kinsley is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Auburn University. Her dissertation is "Speaking Silences: Poetry in Eighteenth-Century Women's Novels" in which she looks closely at the use of poetry in texts by three women writers who were also published poets: Jane Barker, Charlotte Lennox, and Mary Robinson.
MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY
The Membership Secretary is responsible for maintaining the membership lists, coordinating with the listserv moderator to ensure that all members have access to the listserv, and coordinating with the Executive President and Executive Board in matters pertaining to membership.
PLEASE VOTE FOR ONE (there is only one candidate):
Michael Rex, Associate Professor of English at Cumberland University is a long-term member of the Aphra Behn Society and Past Conference President, having hosted the 2009 Aphra Behn Society Conference at Cumberland.
