Aphra Behn Society members,
The Constitution and the Society’s actual practice are no longer in agreement, primarily because we no longer have an annual meeting. I have identified a number of places in the Constitution where the rules for and practice of governance differ, and have proposed changes to the Constitution to account for the way we now do business.
According to the Constitution, in order to amend it, we need a petition with the proposed amendments signed by ten members of the Society. The proposed amendments and the ten signatures are then presented to the Executive Board. Once the Executive Board approves the amendments, the Society must ratify the changes by voting, which we will conduct electronically.
Please review the attached document, which contains the original problematic parts of the Society’s Constitution (problem parts in red) and the proposed amendments (amended sections in blue). Then please write to me at Karen.gevirtz at shu.edu<mailto:Karen.gevirtz at shu.edu> by November 30, 2011 if you agree that I may present the amendments to the Board for their approval. I must have at least ten assenting emails to move forward with these amendments. Please do not assume someone else will vote for you. Our membership is small and your silence on this matter could simply freeze this process, which is necessary for us to continue operating. If you wish to send me your approval of the amendments so I can send them to the Board, please send me an email that states that I have your signature, and then sign your full name as you would sign a petition.
If you have any questions or concerns about the proposed amendments, please write me at karen.gevirtz at shu.edu<mailto:karen.gevirtz at shu.edu> and I will be happy to explain or clarify anything. Again, I urge you to take a moment (right now would be good) to send me your approval if you agree to amending the Constitution.
Best,
Karen
