“The Immaterial Eighteenth Century” 



In response to the sustained scholarly focus on the material aspects of eighteenth century 

culture, the core concern of this interdisciplinary, bilingual (English and 

French) conference will be reactions to instability in the material realm, including but 

not limited to the emergence of an affective public sphere; a revaluation of labour; 

cosmopolitanism; sensibility; the new spiritualism; political radicalism and rights 

discourse; supernaturalism and the rise of the gothic; and anti-slavery and anti-imperial 

movements. Papers on these and any topics related to the material and the immaterial in 

the period will be welcomed. Panels dedicated to new theoretical models are particularly 

encouraged: looking beyond “thing theory” and “interiority,” enquiries that have 

dominated the field for the last decade, what approaches can raise the ethical and political 

stakes in the study of eighteenth-century literature and culture? 

As is traditional with CSECS, NEASECS, and the Aphra Behn Society, proposals not on 

the conference theme are also welcome.

Propositions d’atelier et de communication pour le congrès de la 

Société canadienne d’étude du dix-huitième siècle (SCEDHS), 

tenu conjointement avec la 

Northeast American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (NEASECS) 

et la Société Aphra Behn 

Université McMaster 

Hamilton, Ontario, 27-29 octobre 2011 



Thème du congrès : « La culture immatérielle au dix-huitième siècle » 



Dans un contexte dominé par l’attention qu’a accordée la recherche savante à la culture 

matérielle du dix-huitième siècle, le thème de ce congrès interdisciplinaire et bilingue 

(anglais et français) invite plutôt à s’interroger sur les réactions qu’inspire le sentiment 

de l’instabilité des choses, que celui-ci s’accompagne ou non de l’émergence d’une 

opinion publique fondée sur le partage d’une communauté d’affects. Il peut s’agir de la 

revalorisation du travail ; du cosmopolitisme ; de la sensibilité et des nouvelles formes 

de spiritualisme ; du radicalisme en politique et de l’avènement d’un discours sur les 

droits de la personne ; du surnaturel et de l’essor du genre gothique ; de la naissance des 

mouvements anti-esclavagiste et anti-impérialiste. 

Les propositions d’atelier ou de communication sur ces sujets ou sur des thèmes 

apparentés sont les bienvenues, tout comme celles qui porteraient sur de nouveaux 

modèles théoriques. Par delà la thing theory ou la question de l’intériorité, dont les 

perspectives ont dominé la dernière décennie, quelles approches sont-elles désormais 

à même de redéfinir les enjeux éthiques et politiques que comporte la recherche sur la 

littérature et la culture du dix-huitième siècle? 

Comme le veut la tradition de la SCEDHS, NEASECS, et la Société Aphra Behn, les 

chercheurs sont libres de soumettre des propositions se situant en dehors du thème du 

congrès.
